On Wednesday, July 30th, 2025, MP Leah Gazan issued the following statement:

In light of recent investigations revealing the Government of Canada has continued allowing arms exports to Israel, I condemn in the strongest possible terms Prime Minister Carney’s cabinet which continues to make Canada complicit in genocide and war crimes. I call upon the federal government and its officials to immediately end all permits for arms and military sales to Israel.

Despite the Liberals agreeing to a motion by the NDP to implement a two-way arms embargo on Israel – and repeatedly claiming that they support peace in Gaza – tax data uncovered by World Beyond War, the Palestinian Youth Movement, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East and Independent Jewish Voices demonstrates that military cargo has continued to enter Israel from Canada. Shockingly, some of the military parts were being shipped on commercial flights.

It is astounding that Liberal ministers and senior government officials have continued to deny their ongoing participation in Benjamin Netanyahu’s genocide in Gaza. A majority of people across Canada opposes this genocide.  They have been misled by the Liberal government, which is participating in the violation of international and domestic laws in Palestine.

The Government of Canada is legally bound by the UN Genocide Convention, which requires that all signatories undertake to prevent and punish “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.” By continuing to allow Canadian military arms sales to Israel, Government of Canada officials are violating their duty under this Convention.

We were promised that Prime Minister Carney would fight back against Trump’s brand of unlawful right-wing politics. So far, we have seen him repeatedly taking pages out of Trump’s book, violating the rule of law both domestically and internationally. It seems PM Carney is intent on violating Indigenous peoples’ legally enshrined rights, whether it's those of indigenous peoples in Canada—whose constitutionally protected aboriginal and treaty rights are violated under with Bill C-5—or those of Palestinians in Gaza—whose human rights are being grossly breached in Israel’s ongoing genocide.

We cannot pick and choose for political convenience when it comes to upholding human rights. Each time human rights are violated by global leaders without consequence,  we move closer to the dark moments in history when fascism and violent lawlessness undermined democracy. I call on the Government of Canada to fulfill its commitment to a real two-way arms embargo on Israel, and to support investigations into genocide and war crimes to ensure justice under international law is served. How will history remember us?

We must undertake all measures possible to ensure the genocide of Palestinians is ended. This includes Canada joining the proceedings before the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice alleging genocide.

At a time when the world is watching, we must join in our collective humanity and stand against the genocide in Palestine.
