MP Leah Gazan Statement on National Indigenous Peoples Day
Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day to all Indigenous people across Turtle Island, and beyond!
This year marks the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day, a call to celebrate the history, cultures and traditions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples across Turtle Island. June 21st also marks summer solstice, welcoming a time of renewal and connection for many Indigenous traditions and peoples.
Let us honour the teachings and stories that Indigenous people have carried forward through generations, celebrate those continuing to carry them forward today, and build a beautiful future for those who will continue to carry them on.
Indigenous people have faced attacks on our human rights for centuries, and over this last year we have faced a disturbing escalation in these attacks. The gravity of these rights violations weighs heavily on many of us. Let us take time today to celebrate our resistance and celebrate the fact that we are still here in spite of all the obstacles that have been put in our way.
We are here. We are powerful. We are strong. We are beautiful.
Today and everyday, I celebrate and honour us!
Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day.
