MP Gazan Statement on National AccessAbility Week

On June 5, 2026, MP Leah Gazan, NDP Critic for Persons with Disabilities made the following statement:

As we mark National AccessAbility Week, I extend my heartfelt gratitude and solidarity to disability advocates and organizations who have worked tirelessly to make Canada more equitable and inclusive for everyone. Discussions about building an accessible Canada must include addressing the systemic human rights violations. As signatories to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, we must uphold the rights of the disability community.

The disability community has been forced into legislated poverty due to limited income supplements that have a high administrative burden to apply for. I extend my solidarity to all those fighting to decrease the administrative barriers. These income and administrative barriers underscore the importance of implementing a guaranteed livable basic income to ensure that everyone has access to a dignified income while eliminating administrative burdens.

The NDP remains steadfast in our commitment to dismantling these barriers and ensuring the disability community can live in dignity. We know that building a "Canada Strong" means building a Canada that upholds disability justice, ensures human rights are upheld, and leaves no one behind.
