MP Leah Gazan Statement on the Shamattawa First Nations State of Emergency: Hepatitis A Outbreak

On July 20, 2026, NDP Critic for Indigenous Affairs Leah Gazan Issued the Following Statement:

I am highly concerned with news of a State of Emergency in the Shamattawa First Nation due to a Hepatitis A outbreak.

As community members and allies work to resolve this crisis, I uplift the voices of the Shamattawa leadership along with the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs calling for immediate action to strengthen the public health response to ensure community members’ health and safety are upheld.

To echo AMC Grand Chief Kyra Wilson, no First Nation should have to declare a State of Emergency due to a preventable public health outbreak.

I stand firmly behind First Nations leaders calling on governments to immediately provide emergency funding and additional healthcare personnel, medical supplies, vaccination efforts, and public health resources; to co-ordinate provincial and federal support that respects the leadership and decision-making authority of Shamattawa First Nation; to advance long-term investments in healthcare infrastructure, housing, clean water, sanitation, and preventative public health measures; and to support a First Nations-led health transformation that addresses the systemic inequities contributing to preventable public health emergencies.
