WINNIPEG – NDP Member of Parliament Leah Gazan joins government officials and community members today to announce $10 million in federal funding to Women’s Health Clinic, a community clinic for reproductive health services. This funding will go towards much needed building repairs and deep retrofits to ensure the clinic can continue safely operating for many years to come.
According to Gazan, this funding is critical for upholding the rights of women and gender diverse people.
“Right now we’re seeing an attack on bodily autonomy and reproductive rights across the country, much of which comes from the hateful politics on the rise south of the border. At times like this, it is essential we uphold the rights of women and gender diverse people to safe, trauma-informed and gender-affirming care.”
Having operated for 48 years, the Women’s Health Clinic has helped fill gaps in healthcare services such as midwifery, abortion care and birth control for women and gender diverse people throughout Manitoba and beyond. But its aging 60 year-old building has recently fallen into need of repair, potentially jeopardizing services for community members.
“Reproductive care is health care, and we shouldn’t be treating it as less important than other health needs,” said Gazan. “Whether it’s a broken arm, knee surgery or an abortion, folks deserve barrier-free access to healthcare.”
“This funding will be vital for upholding that access to care in Winnipeg Centre. I thank members of the Women’s Health Clinic and feminist advocates for all the hard work they’ve done to ensure reproductive rights are protected in our community.”
