Today, Jeremy Skibicki was found guilty of first-degree murder in the deaths of Morgan Harris, Marcedes Myran, Rebecca Contois, and Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe.
No family should ever have to endure what these families faced from the justice system and all levels of government to ensure that their loved ones’ human rights are upheld. I echo the calls of the families for an inquiry into the failure of the Winnipeg Police to initiate an immediate search of the landfill. The heartache caused by the delay of this essential search has caused irreparable harm to the families and our community.
The evidence presented during this trial was deeply troubling for both the families and the community, and our Winnipeg Centre team is ready to support in any way we can in the aftermath of this case. I hope that the verdict allows the families some sense of closure and justice. I am wishing the families healing as they continue to grieve.
I’d like to extend my love and support to all impacted family members of Morgan Harris, Marcedes Myran, Rebecca Contois, and Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe. Your courage and resistance has inspired me to work even harder for justice and the human rights of all Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals. Sending all my love, solidarity and hope.
