TREATY 1 TERRITORY, WINNIPEG – While questioning ministers in parliament today, NDP MP Leah Gazan (Winnipeg Centre) grilled the government for failing to provide support for people who are struggling to pay their rent during the pandemic.
"When it comes to rent for people's homes, this government didn't even try," said Gazan. "Many people in our community couldn't make rent on April 1 or on May 1. June 1 is coming quickly. When will this government act to ensure families make their rent next month?"
During this crisis, the NDP has been calling on the federal government to help people across the country – including with their monthly rent. Many families were struggling financially before the pandemic and COVID-19 and the shut downs have made it even harder for them to make ends meet.
"Winnipeg Centre is the third poorest riding in the country and COVID-19 has put many on the verge of homelessness," said Gazan. "Instead of bailing out their big corporate buddies, this government needs to provide proper rental assistance so that families don't end up in the streets."
The NDP will continue to push the federal government to do the right thing and deliver support to the people who need it.
NDP MPs Leah Gazan (Winnipeg Centre) and Jenny Kwan (Vancouver East) are standing alongside women’s organizations and migrant rights advocates calling on all Members of Parliament to reject the Liberals’ border and immigration legislation, Bill C-12, expected to be voted on at third reading this week.
On the anniversary of École Polytechnique, let this be the moment we choose action over sorrow. Truth over silence. Justice over delay. We owe it to all of them.
Today is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a day to reaffirm the rights of persons with disabilities - rights that are outlined in the Charter, the Canadian Human Rights Act, and international treaties and conventions such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
