On June 3, 2026, MP Leah Gazan made the following statement:
Today is the seventh anniversary of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Final Report.
On this day we honour the heart work of the survivors, families, matriarchs and community members whose testimonies helped inform the Inquiry and generate the 231 Calls for Justice needed to end this ongoing genocide.
And yet, seven years later, we must not forget that the federal government has fulfilled only two of those Calls for Action. Just yesterday, a report by the National Family and Survivors Circle Inc. and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives found that nearly half of all federal initiatives launched in response to the Calls for Justice have already ended or are at risk of expiring in the near future.
This past weekend, the Permanent People’s Tribunal ruled that the Government of Canada’s current policies constitute an ongoing genocide against Indigenous Peoples. Given this finding, it is unconscionable that the Liberal government continues to turn a blind eye while women and gender diverse folks continue to be murdered or go disappeared.
The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) is clear: “Article 22 (2): States shall take measures, in conjunction with indigenous peoples, to ensure that indigenous women and children enjoy the full protection and guarantees against all forms of violence and discrimination.”
It is not only morally appalling that the government is still not taking real action seven years after the publication of the Final Report on the National Inquiry into MMIWG; it is a violation of the federal government’s duties under the Constitution and international law. The time to act is well past due: the Liberal government must reverse course and fulfill all 231 Calls for Action without delay.

I write to you today to call for the reversal of the closure to the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) physical drop-boxes slated for May 29th, 2026. Shuttering these drop-boxes will jeopardize access to critical public infrastructure and pose specific harm to seniors, low-income families, unhoused individuals, and people with disabilities in Winnipeg.
Five years ago, the Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation shared preliminary findings of an investigation that indicated over 200 unmarked burials at the Kamloops Residential School site, courageously confirming a truth that Indigenous communities have known to be true for decades - that the Indian Residential School System was a genocidal project.
