Leah Gazan Issued the Following Press Release on the National Day of Action on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQ+

WINNIPEG: NDP MP Leah Gazan (Winnipeg Centre) joins Giganawenimaanaanig, Manitoba’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+) Implementation Committee, alongside families and survivors to honour a recent funding announcement for the Red Dress Alert pilot program in Manitoba. The Government of Canada announced $1.2 million in funding to Giganawenimaanaanig, as well as $100,000 for evaluation on implementing the alert system nationally.

“On this National Day of Action for MMIWG2S+, I’d like to congratulate all families and survivors on this step forward in addressing the ongoing genocide against Indigenous women, girls and gender diverse people,” said Gazan. “I’d also like to thank advocates Sandra DeLaronde and Hilda Anderson-Pyrz for their essential work on ending the crisis of MMIWG2S+, as well as Minister Fontaine for her efforts to support the Red Dress Alert pilot.”

The Red Dress Alert system will notify the public when an Indigenous woman, girl, or gender-diverse person goes missing so they can be brought home safely. In September, the Standing Committee on the Status of Women released its report on the Red Dress Study spearheaded by Gazan, which provided 17 recommendations to the government on implementing a Red Dress Alert in coordination with provinces, territories and Indigenous peoples.

“This is a positive step, but we need to ensure that the government provides long-term, sustainable funding beyond this pilot program,” said Gazan. “I look forward to working with families, survivors and advocates to hold the Liberal government to account and to end the ongoing genocide against Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people.”
