On Friday, October 17, 2025, MP Leah Gazan issued the following statement:
With news of the location of Samuel Bird after several months of searching, my heart goes out to Samuel’s family, friends, community, and loved ones, including his mother, Alanna. After such a long period of waiting and uncertainty, I hope that this announcement provides some closure and peace during this time of grieving.
Nobody should experience this type of violence, and it’s up to us all to uphold the safety and security of all people including Indigenous men and boys.
In recent years we’ve have witnessed a rise of violence against Indigenous men and boys, with many being murdered or reported as disappeared. It is critical that legislators take this issue seriously and prioritize the safety of Indigenous people while providing supports to communities searching for their lost loved ones.
My love goes out to Samuel’s community, family and friends while healing from this tragedy.
